The substitution of one ton of scrap for one ton of a new primary aluminum ingot saves 80% in energy and prevents 12 tons of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere. As scrap contains all the elements needed for alloying purposes, there are further savings in pollution, as all these elements produce CO2 and other polluting contaminants.
The use of aircraft scrap in ‘secondary’ aluminum production, such as A380 alloy, means that costly alloying elements are lost. For example, magnesium must be reduced to 0.10% from 2.5% by chlorination at a high temperature, which causes further pollution and the high-cost magnesium is lost.
